Today’s story

Assyria threatens and boasts, but Isaiah points beyond fear to God's justice, beauty, and coming salvation. Human intimidation is loud; God's rule is greater.

Freedom in Christ is not permission for selfishness. Walk by the Spirit, love one another, and let His fruit replace the works of the flesh.

God sees hidden schemes and can overturn what people think is secure.

Buy truth, wisdom, instruction, and understanding; do not trade them away.

The story in children’s words

God said the one who walks rightly and refuses bribes will live safe on high, and his eyes will see the King in His beauty. God promised the dry desert would blossom like a rose. Then the eyes of the blind would open, the ears of the deaf would hear, and the lame would leap like a deer. God's rescued people would come home singing, with everlasting joy. Then a proud messenger from Assyria stood outside Jerusalem and shouted that the LORD could not save them, but Hezekiah's men stayed silent, just as the king commanded. Paul said we are called to be free, but we must use our freedom to serve one another in love. The fruit of God's Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self-control. Jesus is the King in His beauty, and His Spirit grows this good fruit in us.

It points to Jesus

Jesus frees us not merely from guilt but for a new kind of life. The Spirit forms Christlike fruit in people who could never manufacture holiness by willpower alone.

Talk about it

How can freedom become loving service instead of self-indulgence?
